Top tips on caring for your appliances

Top tips on caring for your appliances

It’s easy to take our appliances for granted, but overlooking the care they need could make the difference between your appliance lasting 10 years or 2. They grant us convenience and comfort in many ways, but just like any great machine, they need a little maintenance and a good clean from time to time. Prevention is always better than cure, and in this case, prevention doesn’t have to mean hours of cleaning and complicated fixes. From laundry to cooking, here’s some of our top tips on keeping your appliances in check:

Freshen your washing machine

If used regularly, and without a routine clean, washing machines can quickly begin to smell and produce loads without the fresh scent you hoped for. This can be the result of a variety of factors, so it’s best to clean the appliance fully for optimum results. Firstly, pour ¼ cup of baking soda into the detergent drawer and add water, pour a cup of white vinegar into the drum and run a high-heat cycle. Once finished, wipe down the door and drum and you’ll be back to fresh washing on your next load. For a washing machine that makes thorough cleaning as simple as the click of a button, choose Gorenje. Our SterilTub programme runs with an empty drum to eliminate bacteria and, ultimately, keep your washing fresh. Explore our laundry range here.

Defrosting the freezer

Frost and clumping ice in the freezer can be a real nuisance when it comes to cleaning, as well as general use. Although your first instinct might be to take a hammer and chisel to it, there is a simple solution. First, line the floor around the freezer with newspaper or towels before pulling what shelves you can from the freezer. Next, turn the appliance off and place a large bowl/container of boiling water with lemon into the bottom shelf, shut the door and leave for a few hours. This will leave it in an easy-to-clean state, smelling fresh and ready to refill. Fortunately, our NoFrost technology prevents frost and ice accumulation, saving you from any unnecessary hassle. Steam clean your oven

Save money and effort with this super-simple, effective, oven cleaning tip. Forget chemical oven cleaner solutions, a bowl of water and lemon sat in the oven at full heat for twenty minutes to half an hour will do wonders for this notoriously hard-to-clean kitchen appliance. The steam will moisten and loosen up any dirt and gristle in the oven and make it a dream to wipe down, without the need for bleach and chemical cleaners. Our ovens come with a fresh enamel interior and AquaClean setting, designed to make this task even easier. Browse our cooking range here.

Dishwasher disinfecting

We rely on the dishwasher to make our kitchen utensils hygienic, and although you might expect all the hot soapy water to keep it clean and efficient, there are several areas where gunk and dirt collect in abundance. For a full clean, run a hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar on the top shelf and follow this with another hot cycle, adding baking soda to the detergent section. Once finished, wipe down the hinges, filter and detergent holster immediately for a fully refreshed appliance.

Toothbrush the tap

Cleaning the sink is one thing, but it’s easy to forget about the tap itself. The moisture around a tap makes it an easy breeding ground for mould and gunk, and if you’re unlucky enough to have a tap that’s made up of several components, the chances are it’ll get dirty quite often and could even get clogged. However, the solution is simple; take an old toothbrush to the tap with hot, soapy water or white vinegar, making sure to clean the main spout and get into any cracks and gaps.
