5 simple facts about dishwashing

5 simple facts about dishwashing
The dishwasher is one of the kitchen’s most celebrated appliances, saving time and effort daily, helping us tackle one of our most-loathed tasks with just the push of a button. We’re lucky to have such an innovative device which affords us this convenience, however, what do you know about dishwashers?

Here’s a few simple facts about this heroic appliance:

  1. The first commercial dishwasher was invented in 1887
After several hand-operated multi dish-washing inventions never quite actualised, Josephine Cochrane, granddaughter of steamboat inventor Jon Fitch, designed and built what became the first commercial dishwasher in 1887. Unveiled at the Chicago World Fair in 1893, initially named Lavadora, the contraption was made up of a wooden wheel laid in a copper boiler with wire compartments for the dishes. Once loaded, the wheel would be turned by a pully and soapy water showered down into it. The product was later then adopted by restaurants and hotels and began its course in kitchen history.
  2. Motor-powered dishwashers were not invented until 1920
It took until the 1920s for a motor-powered dishwasher to come into fruition, due to the implementation of permanent plumbing and other advances in technology, manufacturers were able to launch electric, top-loading dishwashers. However, due to the subsequent economic crash and WW2 following that, it wasn’t until the 1950s when these dishwashers became widely available for an affordable price.
  3. Contemporary dishwashers use 1/10 water of an average hand wash
Recent varied reports state that hand washing your dishes consumes around 100 litres of water per cycle in an average home. Compared to our GV66260UK Fully Integrated Dishwasher, which uses only 9.2 litres per cycle, that’s a considerable difference. This dishwasher also features capacity for 16 place settings with an A+++ energy rating, read more on the Which? Best Buy review. Next time you’re thinking about doing a pre-rinse and pre-wash, think again about the water you could be wasting.
  4. Dishwashers are almost wholly recyclable
Thanks to developments in manufacturing and material engineering, dishwashers can now be produced with sustainability in mind for disposal as well as use. Product waste is almost entirely eliminated through the recycling process, that’s metals, plastics and paper. There’s a whole host of organisations which will recycle your unused dishwasher, some even offering a small fee, so next time you’re changing dishwashers be sure to dispose of your previous one appropriately.
  5. Dishwashers don’t just wash dishes
Although it’s in the title, dishwashers can be a useful tool for washing things other than dishes. People have been known to wash trainers, toothbrushes, hats and more in these trusty kitchen champions. There are no boundaries, you can even find tutorials on how to cook a salmon in the dishwasher… each to their own.
